Abstract

With its history, culture, social life, economy and geography, Konya is one of the rare cities that has a special position among Anatolian cities. The geographical features of Konya and history-based cultural richness have allowed the practice and survival of hand weaving for centuries. Starting with Çatalhöyük, extending to the present day and bearing traces from every period of history, the city has preserved its feature of being the center of hand weaving in all these periods. This stunning city has hosted many special personalities in its environment. Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi is one of these influential personalities. The influence of Mevlana on Konya city and people, has survived to the present day as well as being the most important symbol of Konya. Mevlâna has lived through the ages with the works he left behind. The place, which was built after his death in this region where he spread his knowledge, and is preserved as the Mevlana Museum today, is the most noteworthy silhouette of Konya city; so much so that the site has been the subject of many works in different fields of art. One of these works is the art of carpet. Wall paintings were applied in religious and civil architecture within the Anatolian depiction art of the Westernization Period. Images from nature and details from cities and places are depicted in wall paintings within Turkish painting art. The effects of wall paintings on tapestries in Turkish carpet art can be seen. Especially religious symbols were frequently used in carpets. One of these examples is a tapestry of Mevlana Lodge. In this study, the carpet called “Mevlâna Carpet”, preserved in the private collection; size, material, technique, colour, type and composition features will be examined in general and its place in the History of Turkish Carpet Art will be tried to be assessed.
