Abstract

Besides having some local characteristics peculiar to themselves, the rugs in Sarıkamış region have some comman characteristics with the other coverings in Anatolia. Rugs are generally made from wool. Wool which is black, brown and white in colour is used purely without being dyed. In the past, dyes were made from herbal and natural dyes, but nowadays, generally synthetic dyes are in use. The colours mostly used in dyeing are red, black, brown, green, orange and white. They are weaved in one and two fragments. They are adorned with geometrical motifs besides the motifs of roses, tulips, carnation and of the tree of life and so on. Some of them have some writings on them.
